Wisteria sinensis 'Rosea' is a stunning pink form of the much-loved Chinese wisteria. This deciduous, twining climber produces elegant cascading racemes of gently scented, pea-like flowers that drip from bare stems in late spring, just as the foliage begins to emerge. The pinnate leaves provide an attractive covering for walls and pergolas throughout summer. This showy climber is a must-have for creating that romantic cottage garden feel. Perfect for training over pergolas and covering large expanses of wall, this hardy wisteria reaches a staggering 9m high and 5m across to create a breathtaking display throughout May and June. Height: 9m (30'). Spread: 5m (16').

Culinary note: The flowers are the only edible part of the plant and can be made into an aromatic wine. Their flavour is perfumed. Caution: All other parts of wisteria are poisonous. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Grow wisteria plants in a sunny or semi shaded site in any moist, well drained soil. Wisteria flower buds can be damaged by hard spring frosts so choose a sheltered position. Prior to planting add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil. Provide the twining stems with an appropriate and sturdy support, such as strong trellis or wires attached to walls and pergolas.Standard wisterias will especially need a sturdy support when grown to protect the head from damage by strong winds .
Feed and water regularly until fully established. In autumn or spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Prune wisteria in July and again in February. During the first two years, prune wisteria to create a framework of permanent stems. Tie in selected lateral shoots to sturdy supports and cut back unwanted growth. Once the desired framework has been created, continue pruning wisteria twice a year to contain the plants growth within its allotted space.
