Water regularly until young hydrangea plants are established. In autumn, apply a mulch of well rotted manure to the base of the plant taking care not to mound it up against the stem as this may cause it to rot. Leave faded hydrangea flower heads in place until new buds swell in spring. These will help protect the delicate buds from frost damage.

Prune hydrangea in spring. Reduce stems to restrict their growth to the available space and to improve the shape of the plant. No other pruning is necessary. However, Hydrangea paniculata will tolerate hard pruning and the removal of the oldest stems to a few buds from ground level if necessary. This will also encourage larger flower heads to be produced.

Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten. Position hydrangea plants in sun or semi shade and sheltered from cold winter winds. Plant Hydrangea paniculata in borders in rich, moist, well drained soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure to improve heavy clay or light gravel soils.

A stunning hydrangea 2012-01-19

After just one summer season, this hydrangea came up trumps and flowered in it's first season. The flowers are firstly mostly white/cream, but as the season progresses, the blooms turn a nice shade of pink, darkening as Autumn comes along. Although rather tall and lanky to begin with and therefore needing a bit of support, I think once the plant has had some time to grow and gather strength, it will stand proud and tall in any garden. A very good buy!
