Not often seen, this hardy herbaceous perennial deserves a prominent spot in the garden! From midsummer, Morina longifolia produces stout flower stems with whorls of tubular white-pink blooms which rise above clumps of thistle-like leaves. As each flower is pollinated it darkens from pink through crimson to give an attractive multi-coloured display on every stem. Even more unusual, the spiny leaves emit a strong citrus fragrance when brushed against. Great for adding texture and colour to herbaceous borders, cottage gardens, gravel gardens and exotic schemes, the spent flower stems of Whorlflowers also look fantastic when left in place for winter. Height: 90cm (36"). Spread: 30cm (12").

Morina enjoys a well drained soil. It requires sharp drainage and thrives in poor, sandy soils. Avoid sites that sit wet in winter.

Cut back Morina flower spikes as the blooms fade. Morina resents cold, wet conditions, and will appreciate some protection during particularly wet winter weather.
