Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

Introduced by the Romans, the walnut has long been valued for its tasty nuts. It is also a handsome specimen tree for the larger garden, forming a short trunk and broad crown, clothed in shiny, bright green, pinnate leaves composed of oval leaflets. The leaves are distinctly aromatic when crushed. In autumn, the foliage turns shades of yellow and bronze. The smooth bark is olive-brown when young, maturing to silvery-grey. Drooping male catkins appear in spring whilst pollinated female flowers turn into green leathery husks that contain nutritious walnuts on older trees. Walnuts provide food for numerous insects, and the nuts are highly attractive to small mammals. Although partially self-fertile, cross-pollination ensures the best crops. Height: 30m (100ft). 15m (50ft).

Grow walnut trees in moist, well drained soil in full sun. When growing walnut trees, choose a sheltered position as young trees can be damaged by frosts. Prior to planting walnut trees, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil, and drive a stake into the planting hole to support the tree once it is planted. Plant walnut trees at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery, and use a tree tie to fasten the tree to the stake. Walnut roots inhibit the growth of other plants, so for best results avoid planting other plants under the canopy (which roughly mirrors the extent of the roots) or where the canopy will reach in future.

Nut trees do not suffer weed competition well, so keep weeds and grass clear from within a 30cm radius of base of the tree. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the tree. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer. Walnuts can be slow to establish and during particularly dry periods they will require watering whilst the root system develops.

Prune walnut trees between mid summer and early winter to develop a standard tree with a strong central leader. In the first year, remove laterals from the lowest third of the tree. Shorten laterals from the middle third of the tree by half. Leave laterals at the top third of the tree intact. In following years repeat the process, removing the laterals from the lower third of the tree that were shortened the previous year, until the desired length of clear stem has been achieved. By the fourth year the tree should have achieved a good height and further pruning can be kept to a minimum, removing only dead, damaged or misplaced stems.
