FICUS CARICA (Fig)

Aftercare: Indoors, grow in loam-based potting compost. (John Innes No. 3) with added fine bark chippings, in full or filtered light. Outdoors, grow in humus-rich, leafy, moist, well drained soil in full sun or partial shade with shelter from all drying winds. Mulch annually.

FORSYTHIA

Flowering time: March-April
Height: 8ft (2.5m); spread, 6-8ft (180-250cm)
Aftercare: Will grow well in any fertile soil, but require an open position with good drainage. Soak the roots for 2-3 hours prior to planting. Spread the roots out carefully and plant firmly 3-4ft (90-120cm) apart. When planting is complete, water well and continue watering for a few days if the weather is dry. Remove old wood after flowering and shorten vigorous shoots to keep bush tidy.

FREESIAS

Flowering time: July to September
Height: 10-12in (25-30cm)
Aftercare: Store in original paper bags in warm place until planting time. Plant the corms from mid March 2 inches (5cm) deep and 4 inches (10cm) apart in any reasonable soil, choosing a sunny sheltered position. Water frequently and thoroughly during dry weather.

FUCHSIAS

Flowering time: June to October
Aftercare: Will grow in almost any well drained soil to which has been added some organic fertiliser. Plant 12 inches (30cm) apart following the same method as for Chrysanthemums. Water frequently during dry spells. Are ideal for pot plants, window boxes, containers and beds and borders. A suitable potting compost can be made from a mixture of peat, sharp sand and fine soil. Provide adequate drainage by placing a layer of crocks, approx half inch (1.25cm) deep at the bottom of the containers. Water frequently and pinch out the leading shoots and laterals several times to encourage bushy growth.

FUSCHIAS (Basket and Balcony)

Aftercare: Can be used to create a cascade of beauty, planted in hanging baskets, window boxes, patio tubs etc.
